As one might imagine, the high caliber of the young women who take part in the Outstanding Young Woman Program makes the judges’ job of choosing one young woman to represent all the finalists a difficult assignment that carries a heavy responsibility. The judging standards are devised to evaluate the qualities and characteristics the Outstanding Young Woman Program believes every young woman should strive to possess. The standards emphasize the positive and stress the overall development of the individual by focusing on excellence and achievement in scholarship, perception, character and personality, creativity, physical fitness and dealing with others. The selection process employs a system by which each finalist is assigned a score ranging from 1 to 10 in each judging category by each judge. A finalist’s score in each category are added, and the sum is then weighted according to that category’s percentage of the overall scoring. The weighted scores for each contestant are added, and the overall point totals serve as a guideline to determine the award recipients. Interview - 20% The five member panel interviews each contestant for a period of 10 minutes. The judges panel looks for perception, a sense of values, clarity of expression, concern for others and ability in human relations. Scholarship and Achievement - 20% The High School Counselors Association evaluates the finalists transcripts of grades and scores of scholastic tests in seeking to recognize achievement in academics as well as a contestant’s involvement in her school and community activities. Performing Arts - 20% The finalists are judged on their ability to convey originality, technical ability, appropriateness of costume, and stage presence during a 120 second presentation of a vocal, instrumental, painting, sewing, dance, reading or other talent of her choice. Aerobics and Fitness - 20% Coordination, stamina, agility, posture and carriage are considered in an overall evaluation of health and physical well being during this 6 to 8 minute Aerobics and Fitness Routine. Presence and Presentation - 20% The finalist is evaluated on naturalness in carriage, posture and pose, and confidence, when moving about the stage in a choreographed routine. She is also evaluated on her ability to communicate as she answers a question drawn from a fish bowl. The finalists do not receive a list of questions to review before the on stage question is drawn.
